3-days Advanced Training course in Marine Biotechnologies (January 2023)

The course on “Blue Bio-refinery technologies: from research to the industry with applications on products and biomaterial from algal biomass and sidestreams of fisheries and aquaculture” is supported by ERA-NET Cofund on Blue Bioeconomy Unlocking the Potential of Aquatic Bioresources (BlueBio), co-organised with the National Research Council (CNR Italy) and the University of Foggia (Italy), with the patronage of the European Society of Marine Biotechnology (ESMB), is now open for applications.

BlueBio ERANET COFUND coordinates R&D funding scheme to strengthen Europe’s position in the blue bioeconomy and addresses gaps to finally identify ways of bringing bio-based products and services to the market and find new ways of creating value from in the blue bioeconomy.

The goal of the course is to improve technological knowledge on biorefinery processes, theoretical and practical approach.

The target to address the course is PhD holders and/or experienced people in the field (priority researchers from BlueBio ERANET COFUND projects)

After an evaluation process, the selected applicants will be invited to attend the training course face-to-face (or virtually in case of Covid19 lockdown) in mid-January 2023.  

The course is designed for up to 25 applicants, with priority for people working within projects cofunded by BlueBio ERANET COFUND.

General rules:

  • This training course is addressed to PhD holders and/or people with at least 3 years of experience in Chemistry, Biotechnology, Marine Biology, Fishery and Aquaculture;
  • Applicants should be working in research institutions, universities or industries with focus on the related fields;
  • No registration fees;
  • Accommodation and local travel expenses will be covered by Bluebio ERANET Cofund;
  • A travel grant up to 370 euros can be provided to participants, please contact the organizers.

Venue

The Department of Agriculture, Food, Natural Resources and Engineering (DAFNE) of the University of Foggia is almost in the centre of Foggia. The city is located in the northern area of the Apulia Region, Italy. The STAR*Facility Centre, a technological hub of the University of Foggia, is in the Industrial Area of Foggia (zona ASI), 10 km from the city centre.

The IMTA Plant, which will be visited during the second day of the training school, is located in the Adriatic Sea, three miles from the north coast of Gargano Promontory, in front of the Varano Lagoon.

Transportation

By Air

Foggia has the local Gino Lisa Airport, located about 3 km from the city centre. Currently, it is connected with Milan Malpensa Airport and Turin Airport, with flights operated by Lumiwings. The city centre can be easily reached by taxi or urban bus that can be found just outside the airport.

Bari Airport, with connections to all of Europe and the main Italian cities, is 100 km from Foggia and has public transport from the airport to Foggia centre. A direct bus can be taken from Bari Airport to Foggia Bus Station; travel time is approximately 90 minutes. To check the timetable, please click here. Bari Airport is also connected to Foggia by Ferrotramviaria trains, and the train station is out of the Arrival Terminal. Taking the Ferrotramviaria train makes it possible to arrive at Barletta train station and then find a train connection to Foggia train station by Trenitalia trains.

By Train

The train station in the centre of Foggia offers connections to numerous Italian cities, including Rome, Milan, Bologna and Bari, by high-speed Trenitalia trains, Freccia Rossa and Freccia Argento. To book and check the timetable, please click here.

Accommodation

The University of Foggia will provide accommodation in a selected hotel and local transfers from the hotel to the DAFNE Department, STAR* Facility Centre and IMTA Plant by bus. Detailed info will be provided as soon as possible.
